West San Jose's Santana Row (SR or The Row) is a residential and commercial district in West San Jose. It is near the Winchester Mystery House and Westfield Valley Fair, both local landmarks. Santana Row intersects Stevens Creek Boulevard, a major thoroughfare.

History

Santana Row takes its name from Frank M. Santana, a member of the San Jose planning commission in the 1950s and the name of a park in the neighborhood. Before the shopping center was built, the site was a Town and Country Village.

Santana Row s largest building (Building 7, Santana Heights) was destroyed by fire on August 19, 2002, while it was under construction. There were at least 15 smaller fires in the area caused by embers, and 132 people lost their homes in a nearby apartment complex that was destroyed by embers.[3] The fire was the most destructive structure fire in San Jose's history, with damages estimated at $129 million[4].

In 2001-2002, a 42-acre village within a city was developed at a cost of $450 million and was considered the most ambitious project of its kind in the country at the time. Mixed-use development was considered a success in 2010.

In 2004, Santana Row received the CELSOC Engineering Excellence Award, while in 2003, Builder Magazine named it a Project of the Year.
